WHAT IF A STUDENT IS NOT SURE IF THEY WANT TO PARTICIPATE IN MUSIC IN HIGH SCHOOL?
Remember when your children wouldn’t eat the food you made for them? You always said, “Try it before you decide you don’t like it.” Music is the same way. Your child should sign up for music even if they are unsure. If at some point he/she decides music is not for them, They can drop the class. It is much easier to drop something after trying it, than to join later when he/she decides they miss it.
CAN PARTICIPATION IN HIGH SCHOOL MUSIC GROUPS BENEFIT A STUDENT WHEN APPLYING FOR COLLEGE
Yes! College administrators are looking beyond test scores and core curriculum grade point averages in determining a student’s character, intellectual capacity, creative attitude, and potential for success. Participation in a wide variety of high school programs, especially the Fine Arts, has become a valued measure of student achievement. Research has revealed high school music students consistently have higher grade point averages than non-music students in the same school, and music students tend to score 30 to 50 points higher than their non-music peers on SAT exams. Students engaged in the purposeful study of music discover their reading, comprehension and motor skills are strengthened, along with their ability to engage and succeed in other school subjects.
One of the valuable outcomes of music education is the expansion of imagination. The art of music creation requires an enormous amount self-discipline. It teaches students how to handle frustration and failure in pursuit of both tangible and intangible ideas. It requires setting goals, determining a technique, figuring out how to apply it, and continually making an evaluations and revisions. In other words, student musicians are constantly applying creative/critical thinking in discovering unique solutions to problems.
HOW IS THE MUSIC PROGRAM DIFFERENT IN HIGH SCHOOL
While the actual act of playing an instrument is similar, the social network and safety net high school music provides is very different from junior high school setting. From day one, your child will be musically and personally mentored by successful upperclassmen who have a vested interest in their success. They will have dozens of new and like-minded friends before school even begins and have experiences (Friday night football games and trips) unlike anything they have experienced in junior high.
IS IT POSSIBLE TO PARTICIPATE IN ATHLETICS AND A MUSIC ENSEMBLE
YES! There might be occasional conflicts, but know our faculty, staff and administration work hard to resolve as many conflicts as possible before they occur and work collaboratively to solve them when they arise. Each year music students can be found on the roster of most every sports team sponsored by Norwalk, including: football, basketball, baseball, track, cross country, soccer, volleyball, tennis, and wrestling. In addition to athletics, music students frequently participate in academic/extra-curricular activities as well.
HOW MUCH TIME OUTSIDE OF THE NORMAL SCHOOL DAY IS REQUIRED?
Each music ensemble has unique requirements for participation. Some ensembles require very little (less than standard homework) while other ensembles require a more substantial commitment. Generally, the greater the level of commitment, the greater the reward and memories. Regardless of the ensemble, a calendar will be provided well in advance to help you plan for these events.
WHAT ARE THE COSTS?
The costs associated with the music program depend on which ensembles your child participates in and what events they participate in. The music boosters and staff work together to provide fundraising opportunities for each and every child to ensure no one is excluded due to financial constraints.
WHICH MUSIC CLASS IS RECOMMENDED FOR REGISTRATION
All incoming students should register for Band P.E. or Orchestra.
HOW DO I PROCURE AN INSTRUMENT?
The school provides many of the larger and more expensive instruments (i.e. tubas, trombones, string basses, cellos etc.) We encourage students who play smaller, less expensive instruments to either rent or purchase their own instrument. Although we do have smaller instruments available, quantities are limited. We will not let instrument availability or financial constraints keep your child from participating. More information regarding instrument availability will be mailed as the new school year approaches.
